Проблем при дизајнирању интерфејса за програме јесте како да ствар буде једноставна и проста за коришћење. Што је интерфејс једноставнији, то је лакше протумачити га на начин другачији од намераваног, а корисници ће се питати „зашто не могу овим програмом да урадим ствар Икс? Изгледа као да би морао да ми дозволи, али неће“. Ово се не дешава са компликованим програмима, нити са комплексним творевинама било које врсте, јер је њихова примена јасно одређена на основу мноштва полуга, точкова, дугмади и бројчаника који ограничавају корисникову машту и спречавају је да одлута. Ако је нека ствар веома једноставна, људи могу лако да погрешно протумаче њену сврху.

The hard part in designing human-software interface is keeping it simple to understand and use. The simpler an interface is, the more open it is for different interpretations, and users are more likely to wonder: „Why can’t I do XYZ with this thing? It looks like it should let me do that, but it won’t“. This doesn’t happen with complex pieces of software, or with complex creations of any kind, whose purpose is well-established via the slew of levers and pulleys and buttons and knobs which prevent user’s imagination from running amok. If a thing is very simple, people will often misjudge its purpose.

Compiz Plugins Goodness

Then you can draw with your mouse (check GConf /apps/compiz/plugins/annotate/ keys for default key/button combinations) and take a screenshot including annotations, like so:

Ако често користите Control тастер а ретко или нимало Caps Lock, није лоша идеја заменити им места. Emacs тако одједном добија много више смисла, а и честе комбинације попут Ctrl-C и Ctrl-V много се лакше изводе из основне позиције.

Замену можете обавити из Gnome Keyboard Preferences / Layout Options / Ctrl key position или изменом ~/.xmodmap фајла

remove Control = Control_L
keysym Control_L = Caps_Lock

Такође, програмерима може користити следећа линија у .xmodmap фајлу:

Моја улица под снегом

Моја улица под снегом изгледа као да је закрпљена белом крпом. Аутомобили вире из снега као да ће сваког часа на неког скочити. Али ипак, поред свега тога, моја улица од јутра до мрака одјекује дечјом веселом грајом и шкрипом санки.

А када прође вече и светла се погасе у улици наступају мрак и гробна тишина. Моја улица под снегом ноћу изгледа овако: аутомобили упали у мрак, снег добио плавкасто-сивкасту боју, зграде су некако ћудљиве… И то се тако понавља док не прође зима.

Ево нечег што је самим чудом спасено од заборава. Ову песму (тачније обраду Металикине „One”) написао сам у средњој школи, ваљда у другом разреду, када сам учио лепо програмирање у TopSpeed окружењу. Језик у питању је Modula-2. Песму сам послао на једну од SETNet дискусионих група, а неко из уредништва домаћег часописа Chip ју је објавио у истом. Chip је тада представљао underground алтернативу мејнстрим часописима попут Рачунара и Света компјутера који су и тада, као и сада, много више пажње поклањали хардверу, играма и готовом софтверу него програмерским техникама. То што је Chip објавио моју песму било је својеврсно признање ако не песничког умећа, а оно бар релевантности тематике обраде.

Сам текст је доскора за аутора (тј. мене) био изгубљен, све док нисам игром случаја натрапао на њега читајући Google Groups ― неко је читав текст прекуцао из часописа и тиме заслужио моју вечну захвалност.

Песму преносим у изворном облику, онако како је била написана пре више од 10 година, и иако је извесно да бих је данас другачије склепао, не стидим je се. И даље је сматрам својим ремек-делом. Уживајте!

Lesser-Known Shapes in Go: Shape #1, Ursa Minor

If you have never played Go, then it is likely that you have never heard of things like ikken-tobi, kogeima, oogeima, ponnuki, etc. As any experienced Go player knows (it does not necessarily follow that they are any good at the game), those are Japanese terms for certain arrangements of stones on the Go board that keep showing up in games often enough to be given official recognition and, therefore, names. However, not every conceivable arrangement of stones has been named — partly because there is a very large number of them, and partly because most of them are simply not worth any special attention.

In this short series of articles I will concentrate on some rarely-seen shapes that deserve to be mentioned for whatever reason I deem appropriate.

We’ll start with a shape that has recently been observed in a game between two high-dan players on KGS, aromo[6d] vs. Empiror[6d]. The basic shape looks like this:

This shape is completed by the five unmarked stones, which form its trunk. The two marked stones, called tail, are not essential to the shape.

Ursa Minor is a very old shape; it was well-known in ancient China, although under a different name. It is speculated that the apt Chinese sailors brought the game of Go to the shores of Greece as early as in 6th century BC, where it was quickly dismissed as a „silly game for sailors, women and slaves“ and never got a chance to displace such popular games as counting grains of sand, yanking hair to determine when exactly you go bald or shooting arrows over turtles. Historical records, however, tell us that not all was forgotten: one Miletus of Kragus did grasp the inherent complexity and beauty of this strange oriental game and decided to name a star constellation after one of the shapes from the game. Why he chose Latin, a language that wasn’t even to appear until several centuries later, remains an open question.

Ursa Minor is particularly effective when played near the top of the board (or „North“, as some Go theoretists say).
